A new start.

I have decided on the change of title to my blog.

Melton Mowbray is renown for its pork pies, made by a local bakery in the town. We have one other pie maker locally, Brocklesby. There is a annual pie competition held in the town each year, in St Marys Church.

Stilton and Red Leicester cheese are also made locally, and there is a fresh food market on Tuesday, which is also the day farmers come to the cattle market, which I believe is the only one left in the East Midlands. There is also a smaller market on Saturday. Long Clawson is a well known cheese maker, there are a few smaller cheese makers around in the villages.

The title  Melton Pork Pie is protected as is Stilton cheese, both can only use those names if they are made in a designated area

Melton has a long history, well know in the 20's and 30's for hunting. We have 4 local hunts who drag hunt now. There are also quite a few houses known as Hunting Lodges around the town, one is famous as being where Mrs Simpson met Edward V111, before all the furore went on about their relationship, which resulted in him renouncing the throne and living in exile in France for the rest of his life. To keep him out of mischief he was sent to The Bahamas as Govenor General during the war.

A well known house in the town is now a pub and restaurant known as Anne of Cleves. She was apparently given the house by Henry V111 as part of her divorce settlement. We do not know if she actually lived there.

Many of the large houses have now either been demolished or converted into apartments or flats.

It is rumored that the expression 'painting the town red' originated in Melton, when a group of titled Jonnys in their cups, decided to paint all the doors in the town red!!

Belvior Castle and the Vale Of Belvior is in the eastern part of the County.

I could write a lot more about the town. For us, it is now home. We loved the bungalow in Hose and had many friends there. But I realised that at 80 I was not going to be able to carry on driving for much longer. The transport in rural areas is awful. Hose had a bus pass through every two hours into the town, So we made the decision to move into town.

I will write more about that another day.
